Tips On Caring For A Septic System

A septic system that is maintained well should provide the owner a lifetime of hassle-free function. Follow these helpful tips to ensure that your septic system is always running well.

  1. Learn all about your septic tank. In a septic tank, solid waste matter is deposited and settles into the bottom of the tank while frothy scum rises to the top of the tank. Any liquid that is considered excess winds up in the surrounding field, either by the force of gravity or by a pump. Many systems have filters which must be periodically cleaned and cared for.
  2. Since the septic system can only process a limited amount of water at any one time, it is in the best interest of the owner to conserve as much water as possible. Doing things such as inspecting pipes for leaks and installing low-flow toilets go a long way towards this goal.
  3. Never place any heavy objects over the septic tank. Not only is this a direct violation of the law in most places in the United States, but doing so may very well damage the tank itself, inhibit the function of the drainage field, and bring physical harm to the pipes. It is a no-win situation that is easily avoided. However, if the septic tank does become damaged, make sure to call a central Florida septic services company as soon as possible.
  4. Never flush items that are non-biodegradable down the drain. This would include items such as feminine napkins, cigarette butts, and dental floss. These items will quickly clog the drain and interfere with the septic system. It is also not a wise idea to pour chemicals down the drain as these can not only harm pipes but also kill the beneficial bacteria which eat the solid waste within the septic tank.
